Nichols Family Maui Vacation

Day 7 (Saturday)

Today's the day we leave for home, but there's one more place we'd like to see on the way to the airport.  That is the Maui Tropical Plantation, where we take a narrated tour, via tram, of
Hawaii's most common fruit and flower crops. We saw coconut, pineapple, papaya, guava, mango, taro, macadamia nuts, and coffee trees growing here, and I'm sure I'm leaving some out.  The link above shows how their crops are laid out, and what they are, if you're interested.  They also grow many flowers, some quite exotic.  An interesting fact was that where the plantation is situated, at the base of a mountain, they get about 20-30 inches of rain per year (estimate from memory).  Whereas on the mountain itself, a short distance away, the annual rainfall is about 350 inches.  Their location allows them to utilize the runoff from the mountain.

Our tour guide told us all about coconuts and stopped along the way to give a demonstration on husking them.  It's not too hard if you have the right tools and know-how.

We had a great time in Maui, and highly recommend it, if you get the chance.  We're delighted to be able to share our experiences with you, and  hope you've enjoyed "hearing" about our trip.  Don't forget that you can send us comments using the form on the Home page.
