Nichols Family Maui Vacation
Day 5 (Thursday)
Took off, after breakfast at the Swan, with the top down on the convertible for the Maui Ocean Center situated about half way back to the main airport in the middle of the island in Maalaea Bay (see map). Although not too big, there was much to see and we spent about 4 hours there. The center is mostly focused on marine life around Hawaii and the whales that visit there. Especially cool was the ocean exhibit that featured a plexiglass tunnel right through it. Here you could walk, sit, and watch, from inside the same 750,000 gallon tank, all the sea life including 3 to 4 foot wide stingrays, sharks, and many other types of local fishes. Particularly interesting was when a ray would glide slowly over the tunnel and come to a rest on it just a few feet above your head. After escaping their great gift shop for a nominal amount spent, we enjoyed some ice cream and a little more shopping in the adjoining outdoor mall.
We didn't take a lot pictures today, but Sarah got a few panoramics at the Ocean Center.
Next we headed for Kahului and a stop at Pacific
Harley-Davidson, Maui for a couple of otherwise unobtainable t-shirts, or so
I thought. Check the link. I'm not sure where on the site you go to
look at actual motorcycles.
We then made a quick trip to the airport to trade in our convertible for a family sized car that would hold all of our luggage when it's time to come home. After which, we headed to Queen Ka'ahumanu Mall in Kahului where the girls finally found some swim wear to buy.
On the way back, we stopped in Lahaina for dinner outside at one of the original Maui Tacos stands, which are starting to spring up stateside. Yum! Afterwards, we strolled through the nightlife of Front Street people watching and yet more shopping. Fortunately, much of the shopping on this trip was a "just looking" past time.
It's been a long day, and we're in bed by 10:30. Hey, we didn't get to swim today!
