Nichols Family Maui Vacation

Day 1 (Tuesday)

We arrived on a Monday evening with three primary objectives: check in, eat, and sleep!  There's not much to tell about the arrival except that we were excited to finally see the island, ocean, and resort.  It is notable though that the weather was uncharacteristically humid, and we were told that the trade winds and weather were being affected by one of the Hawaiian volcanoes spewing ash.  It was also a bit dryer than usual in terms of rainfall.  By about day 2, the humidity blew away, and we had beautiful 85° sunny days every day.  Could that get old?

We started the morning with breakfast on the resort at the Swan buffet breakfast.  The Swan is a beautiful open air restaurant overlooking a man-made lagoon with waterfall and swans and the beach behind.

The girls were eager to try out the pool, which they did while Paulette & Rad did activity planning.  This was followed by a swim in the ocean at the resort beach.

We drove our rented convertible, which the girls begged for at the rental office, to Lahaina for lunch at Bubba Gump's right on the ocean.   After which we took a walk around town to look at the many shops along Front St.  Later we returned to Bubba Gump's for dessert.

We then took a drive further down Front St. in search of the Banyan tree.  It was an incredible sight to see.  And there were more shops to meander through.

After returning from Lahaina, we cleaned up quickly to go see the nightly cliff diving exhibition at the Sheraton on the Kaanapali resort row.  This was a bit disappointing as far as diving goes, but is an old daily Hawaiian tradition signifying the end of another day in paradise and giving thanks for all that the sea provides.  (Or something to that effect)

Still adjusting to the time difference, we brought a light dinner to our room, and hit the hay early, local time.
